Lagarde says digital euro to be delivered by end of her term
ECB president tells MEPs the digital euro is a “critically important” sovereignty project, while outlining expanded euro repo facilities to bolster the currency’s global role and crisis resilience.
ECB President Christine Lagarde told Brussels lawmakers on Thursday she expects the digital euro project to be completed by the end of her term, framing it as a key pillar of Europe’s monetary sovereignty and financial resilience.
Speaking to members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, she once again emphasized the digital euro as a “critically important” mission for the ECB.
Her reference to the “end of my term” comes amid lingering speculation in Brussels and Frankfurt that she could step down before her mandate formally expires in 2027. Lagarde has publicly denied that she plans to leave early, but reports about a potential departure have continued to circulate, adding a degree of ambiguity to the timeline she outlined for the project.
