The Peg’s festive dinner debate
Join us to chat stablecoins, statecraft, and the future of money with finance author Felix Martin, stablecoin entrepreneur Tony McLaughlin, and fintech expert David Birch.
This is Miguel.
According to the Times’ culinary critic Giles Coren, Miguel is the “genius” behind the Rayuela restaurant in Ealing Broadway.
Miguel doesn’t know anything about stablecoins. He thinks the Genius Act is a government credit program for gifted young children. But he does know a lot about roast suckling pig. And even more about sherry.
Most importantly, he knows how to host a dinner debate party. At short notice.
So if you’re free on Tuesday, December 9, and fancy a ride on the Elizabeth line to deepest darkest West London (once the haunt of the Rolling Stones, Sid James and my dad’s money transmission business; today the home of the North Korean embassy and Neil Kinnock), why not come and join me, Izabella Kaminska, and the Blind Spot crew — famously made up of an Anglo-Polish-Spanish alliance — for dinner, booze and stablecoin talk.
Scott Bessent, sadly, won’t be there. However, we will have the next best thing in the shape of Felix Martin. He is poised to navigate us through the complexities of stablecoin statecraft. And while he may not have broken the World Bank during his time there, he did write the unauthorized biography of money.
Felix has been following the regulatory evolution around stablecoins very closely and will kick us off with an overview of how the hell we ended up implementing a narrow banking model again.
After the gorging that will be Miguel’s specially curated three-course, financially-themed dinner (vampire squid to start, capitalist pig for mains, and whatever a Fidel Castro chocolate cigarillo is for dessert), we’ll move on to the discussion.
This will feature former Citi banker turned fintech-preneur Tony Mclaughlin, who sees stablecoins as the second coming of Peter Thiel travelers’ cheques, and the national fintech treasure that is the inimitable David Birch.
